Yeah, yeah, I know! Major College Football started LAST Saturday but with only one matchup between FBS teams, I will venture to say that THIS weekend is the real start to the season. There is a full line-up of games this weekend and by weekend, I mean Thursday through Sunday. Don’t worry, the Thursday and Friday games will not disappoint. Thursday is headlined by a Big 10 matchup between Ohio State and Minnesota, followed by a Friday night ACC battle between North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Those are just the headliners as there are plenty of other quality games each of those nights, as well.
Ohio State comes into the matchup fresh off of two consecutive playoff appearances. The expectations are sky high again this year, even with a new face behind center. Luckily for OSU, it doesn’t matter who lines up at QB as the top two wide receivers may be the best tandem in the country. Minnesota is no slouch themselves. They rely on a great rushing attack and are usually dynamite at home. Compound homefield advantage with a new Ohio St quarterback, then throw 14 points on top of it and Minnesota looks like the pick to cover the spread. The Elldee Sports formula disagrees, though, and believes that the Buckeyes will win handily in this matchup.
Friday night boasts a matchup between the high-flying North Carolina Tar Heels and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Many people are picking UNC as a dark-horse contender for the ACC championship as Mack Brown has turned this team into an offensive juggernaut. Virginia Tech, on the other hand has run into struggles lately. They started last season strong but dropped four of the final five matches. One thing I do know is that Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia is a daunting place to play a night game and one of the best atmospheres in all of America on a game-night. That won’t be enough to save the Hokies, though, as they will run into a buzz-saw in the form of the Tar Heels. UNC covers the 5.5 point spread easily.
